STORIES WITH RECYCLED OBJECTS
Cerita Dalang
Cerita Dalang is an interactive platform designed to encourage children to play by creating stories and objects from recycled materials. The project aims to provide a visual medium that gives children the opportunity to inspire each other and boost their confidence, regardless of their socio-economy background. Through a series of creative workshops, children aged 7-11 from different backgrounds in Jakarta participated in creating stories and objects using recycled materials. The project's co-design approach allowed children to actively participate in the design process, ensuring that the platform is relevant and engaging for them. By providing a platform for children to share their stories and creations, Cerita Dalang aims to promote creativity, self-expression, independent play, and environmental awareness among children.
This project consists of a stop-motion animation movie based on stories and creations by children, a website (www.ceritadalang.com), and a storybook to encourage them to play with recycled objects. After I graduated from my master degree, I continued Cerita Dalang as a personal initiative project in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Creative workshops with children
The workshop aimed to understand how children aged 7-11 play. Through two sessions with four different groups of children in Jakarta (including street children, those living in slums, and those attending both private and state schools), the workshop sought to gather information about children's play through active observation and creative collaboration.
By observing children's play and co-designing with them, the project shifted towards encouraging open-ended creation and storytelling. The final outcome will be an integrated campaign featuring a visual medium that showcases children's stories and inspires others to transform recycled objects into imaginative creations.
Cerita Dalang Storybook
The storybook isn't an instruction manual for creating artwork. Instead, it acts as a catalyst for imagination, encouraging children to invent their own stories and creations using recycled objects. It's designed to spark creativity and inspire children to explore the narrative possibilities of everyday materials.
